Don't Lie to Oprah Story aired: Friday, January 27, 2006
Talk show host Oprah Winfrey took author James Frey to task for lying about key episodes in his memoir, "A Million Little Pieces." Oprah had bestowed Fry's memoir with her highly coveted and highly lucrative Oprah's Book Club stamp last year which sent sales through the roof. The book was supposed to be a true account of Fry's struggle with drugs and alcohol, but the Smoking Gun website revealed this month that several of Fry's claims were fiction.
Oprah initially defended Fry on the Larry King Show, saying that the "essential truth" of Fry's life was what mattered, but Oprah latter apologized to viewers for those remarks.
Guests:
Virginia Heffernan, New York Times TV critic who wrote about author James Fry and his appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show where Oprah publicly lambasted Fry for lying in his memoir.
