Cover detail of "Two Lives" by Vikram Seth
Vikram Seth's Storied Lives
Story aired: Friday, January 27, 2006

This month novelist Vikram Seth was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle award for "Two Lives," his memoir of his great aunt and uncle. When Vikram was young he left India to go to school. He lived with his Great Aunt Hennie and Uncle Shanti in England.

Years earlier, his uncle also traveled from India to study. Shanti moved to Berlin and while there he was a boarder with Hennie's German Jewish family with no clue that they would someday marry.

Recently Robin Young spoke to Vikram Seth about the story of his great aunt and uncle, a story which surprised even himself.
