Dirty Rap
Story aired: Wednesday, February 15, 2006

Despite its brief existence, hip-hop music is arguably the soundtrack for today's urban youth culture. Throughout the years, this four billion-dollar per year industry has evolved into a powerful social force.

However, major colleges now include curriculums which teach students to think critically about hip-hop, a genre that is often been criticized for profiting from misogyny and glorifying violence.

Berklee College of Music selected some songs and offered insight into hip-hop as a whole. Warning: some of the samples may be considered offensive.

Guests:

Cynthia Gordy, assistant editor at Essence Magazine in New York

Darcie-Nicole Wicknick, co-founder of the Boston Hip-Hop Alliance.
