Elder Care Story aired: Wednesday, February 15, 2006
In this occasional series on elder care, we discuss the different ways in which older people are being cared for.
There are many prohibitive options in caring for an elder loved one. Assisted living facilities come with high costs and many families are unwilling to sell a parents residences to pay for care. Others find it difficult to care for parents over long distances and in their own homes.
The Beacon Hill Village is an innovative program where older people rely on each other through a network of older residents here in Boston. These elders play dues in exchange for assistance that enables them to continue to live in their own homes rather than rely on assisted living.
Guests:
Eleanor Ginzler of the AARP. We also hear from people associated with Beacon Hill Village and talk to listeners who care for aging parents -- long distance.
