Wrongful Birth
Story aired: Monday, March 13, 2006

This week, Mississippi is expected to follow in South Dakota's footsteps and pass a law that will outlaw abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

A new poll by AP-Ipsos shows that Americans hold very conflicted views on abortion. While much of the country is engaged in a debate over abortion -- another more private debate is being waged over termination: the right to end a specific pregnancy. Some parents who learn their fetus is severely compromised and demand the right to death.

Elizabeth Weil wrote about the topic of selective abortion in the Sunday New York Times Magazine. In an article titled "A Wrongful Birth?" Weil tells the story of a woman who brought a lawsuit claiming that lack of information and care from her obstetrician deprived her of the right to abort her severely disabled son.
