Funeral Protests Story aired: Friday, March 24, 2006
Army sergeant Corey Dan will be laid to rest in Norway, Maine tomorrow.
Sgt. Dan was killed in Iraq on March 13th when a roadside bomb hit the Humvee he was riding in. He died having never seen his newborn son.
However, mourners will not be the only ones at Sgt. Dan's funeral. There will also be picketers from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas holding signs that read: "Thank God for Dead Soldiers."
Church members have protested at funerals in 35 states, saying war casualties are God's wrath for America's tolerance of homosexuality. They also hold signs saying "God hates fags."
This week, the Maryland legislature took a first step to stop the protests by approving a bill in the House of Delegates to ban funeral protests. Maryland delegate Mary-Dulany James is the bill's sponsor and joins us.
