Immigration Reform
Story aired: Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Immigration advocates are celebrating a major victory Tuesday after the Senate judiciary committee Monday night approved a bill that would legalize million of undocumented people living in the U.S. after fulfilling requirements.

The bill faces a tough battle on the Senate floor where it was supposed to be considered Tuesday. And even if it does pass the Senate, it would need to be squared with a House bill that takes a hard line on border security, making illegal immigrants felons and calling for a 700 mile fence on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Spanish language DJ's Los Angeles are being credited for playing a part in the debate. This past week, hundreds of thousands of protesters heeded their call to rally on the streets of Los Angeles.

Here & Now called Ricardo Sanchez, host of the "Que Buena" on KBUE-FM. Robin Young talked to Sanchez through translator Juan Jose Gutierrez.
