Gas Prices Up, School Out
Story aired: Tuesday, May 02, 2006

School systems across the country are scaling back on field trips this year to save money on fuel costs.

According to the National Association for Pupil Transportation, school systems are paying as much as 50 percent more for fuel this year as compared to last.

Many districts included more money in their budgets for gas to run their buses, but they're still struggling to pay their transportation bills this spring. And one of them is in Rhea County, Tennessee, where students just had an extra-long weekend off so the system could save on fuel.

School officials say they had planned to take advantage of unused snow days if fuel prices jumped.
