Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Visits Washington Story aired: Tuesday, May 23, 2006
President Bush turns his attention to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict today, as Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert pays a diplomatic visit to the White House, Olmert's first meeting with President Bush since he became prime minister a few months ago.
They will address Israel's controversial plan to draw its own borders by unilaterally withdrawing from the west bank.
Meanwhile, tensions on all sides escalated today when Israel captured the leading Hamas militant in the West Bank, thought to have masterminded many suicide bombings, including an attack at Hebrew University in which five Americans and four Israelis died. Simultaneously, in a move designed to pressure the Bush administration, the US House of Representatives passed a controversial measure to cut off aide to all non-governmental groups working in the West Bank and Gaza, except for health programs. The measure would also deny visas to Palestinian authority members and ban contacts with Hamas.
