The Coming Hurricane Season
Story aired: Tuesday, May 23, 2006

Although we are still cleaning up from last year's Gulf Coast hurricanes, the 2006 hurricane season is only about a week away and most forecasters are predicting a very active season.

They say, thankfully, this season's hurricanes will not be as strong as those we experienced last year, but hurricane activity will be above average.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration outlined its initial forecast for the season yesterday, which is fairly consistent with the prediction of the Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University, another of the country's leading hurricane forecasters.

According to Dr. Klotzbach, of the Project, they estimate that the Atlantic will experience about nine hurricanes in 2006, in comparison to the average, 5.9. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAH) released a similar report, predicting four to six major hurricanes (category three strength or higher), in comparison to the average of two.

Philip Klotzbach of Colorado State University
