Congress Debates Gay Marriage Story aired: Monday, June 05, 2006
The Senate opens three days of debate today on a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Although it is expected that the legislation probably will not pass, the debate itself will force many lawmakers to clearly define their positions on same sex marriage.
President Bush advocates a constitutional amendment that would restrict marriage to two individuals of the opposite sex, emphasizing in his weekly radio address Saturday that the proposal would strike back at judges who had overturned laws prohibiting gay marriage.
Democrats, however, do not seem too concerned by the debate, writing it off simply as a pre-midterm election appeal to social conservatives.
