Sandy Tolan's "The Lemon Tree : An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East"
Heart of a Conflict Story aired: Monday, June 05, 2006
Tolan's "The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew and the Heart of the Middle East" delves into the complicated relationship between Dalia, an Israeli woman growing up in Ramla, and Bashir, a Palestinian man whose family built the house Dalia now inhabits before the struggle for Israeli impendence in 1948 drove them away.
Journalist Sandy Tolan first produced a radio documentary for NPR on the real life story of Dalia and Bashir. Now, he has put the moving story on paper in "The Lemmon Tree." Not only is the book a powerful account of an unlikely friendship, but also a detailed, history of Palestinians and Jews, starting with the British occupation at the turn of the last century, and the 1947 UN vote to split Palestine, giving Jews and Palestinians adjacent states.
