"The Syrian Bride" tells the story of the wedding of a young Syrian woman who lives in the Golan Heights, a region occupied by Israel since 1967. It is not recognized as a country by Syria, which puts her pro-Syrian family in the middle of a sort of no-man's land.
The film plays as a rural domestic comedy, but it is also profoundly sad at times and touches on issues such as racism, sexism and the generational divide.
Director Eran Riklis is an Israeli Jew who made the film in Arabic and co-wrote it with a Palestinian-Israeli screenwriter. Many of the actors in the film are Israeli-Arabs.
