Avoiding Medical Mishaps Story aired: Wednesday, June 14, 2006
It is estimated that as many as 98,000 Americans die each year after going to the hospital from problems that develop after they are admitted, such as pneumonia or infection.
The IHI, in conjunction with hospitals around the country initiated the "One Hundred Thousand Lives Campaign" in December 2004 on the premise that the large-scale implementation of six proven interventions could avoid over 100,000 deaths nationwide in the next 18 months. Today, the IHI will release the results of the campaign in Atlanta. Dr. Don Berwick, the president of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, joins us to discuss the campaign and its achievements.
