Supreme Court Decisions Story aired: Monday, June 26, 2006
This morning a split U.S. Supreme Court knocked down a Vermont law that strictly limits the campaign spending and fundraising of candidates running for state office, claiming that it hinders a candidate's ability to raise money.
In another divided decision, George W. Bush's appointee 2005, Judge Alito, broke a tie vote, ruling that Kansas' death penalty law is constitutional.
Although the Supreme Court failed to produce the much anticipated decision on the Guantanamo Bay detainees, this morning, the court did announce that it will hear a case on the role of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in regulating carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles and power plants. The decision comes in response to the demands of twelve states and many environmental organizations that the U.S. government take a more proactive stance on the Federal Clean Air Act (1963).
