Tension Heightens in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Story aired: Thursday, June 29, 2006

Despite Tuesday's historic agreement between the rival Hamas and Fatah movements in Palestine to recognize the state of Israel, Israeli military action along the Gaza Strip in response to the kidnapping of a wounded Israeli soldier escalates.

The body of eighteen year-old Jewish settler, Eliahu Asheri, was found burried just outside Ramallah this morning. Israeli officials report that a militant group with ties to Hamas, the Popular Resistance Committees, abducted Asheri and, on Wednesday, threatened to kill him if Israel did not end their operations in Gaza.

The same group has also claimed responsibility for capturing an Israeli soldier who, as of Tuesday, was being held in a "secure place."

Also this morning, within the city of Ramallah, Israeli forces detained twenty lawmakers and eight ministers in the twenty-four member Hamas-led cabinet.
