The Declaration of Independence declared individual rights, but first and foremost it was a coming out party for the United States; a grand entrance onto the international stage.

According to author and Harvard professor David Armitage Americans have never made a systematic attempt to trace the afterlife of what came to be called American scripture.
And that's what he does in an upcoming book called "The Declaration of Independence: A Global History."
