"The Death of Kevin Carter"
Story aired: Thursday, August 17, 2006

2005 Oscar Nominee, "The Death of Kevin Carter: Casualty of the Bang Bang Club" tells the story of Kevin Carter, a South African photojournalist, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his controversial photograph of a young starving Sudanese girl being stalked by a vulture.

Carter was a member of a band of four photojournalists known as "The Bang Bang Club," who traveled the war-ravaged black townships of South Africa documenting violence that accompanied the end of apartheid. Carter's work made him the subject of much criticism, even notorious. He committed suicide just weeks after receiving the Pulitzer Prize.

Here & Now speaks with filmmaker Dan Krauss who asks whether journalists ought to be the savior or witness of their subjects in this powerful film. The documentary premiers tonight, August 17, at 7pm ET on CINEMAX.

Guests:

Dan Krauss, Filmmaker
