Rebuilding Lebanon
Story aired: Thursday, August 17, 2006

Lebanese troops began moving south of the Litani River today, in accordance with the UN ceasefire plan, after the Israeli army stepped up its withdrawal from the region and relinquished some of its positions to the Lebanese Army.

Yet, the damage in Lebanon, estimated at fifteen billion dollars, remains. Lebanese refugees are returning to their homes in large numbers, and Hezbollah has reportedly said that many of those displaced in southern Lebanon could be back in their homes within 72 hours. Here & Now speaks with Professor Fawaz Gerges of Sarah Lawrence College about what makes Hezbollah so effective in their relief efforts and how Lebanon may evolve in the wake of the war.
