Acclaimed novelist Claire Messud's new novel "The Emperor's Children"is set in Manhattan.

Best friends Marina, Danielle and Julius met in college and are vaguely alarmed that their time for being special is running out.

They are all fiddling while Rome burns. And indeed, in the final pages two planes hit the World Trade Towers and all of their little lives change.
