"Failure of Imagination"
Story aired: Friday, September 15, 2006

A recent article in the Columbia Journalism review speaks about "failures of imagination" in the U.S. media covering the issue of the torture of detainees in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

We speak to the author of that article, Eric Umansky, as well as Carlotta Gall, who covers Pakistan and Afghanistan for Rhe New York Times. Gall says that her early reporting of two detainees who were killed in U.S. custody in Afghanistan was questioned, delayed and finally buried in that paper. We also hear from former NPR correspondent Sarah Chayes, who says that some of her reporting from Afghanistan was derailed by her superiors at National Public Radio.

Guests:

Eric Umansky

Carlotta Gall

Sarah Chayes
