Sarah Chayes's Afghanistan
Story aired: Monday, September 18, 2006

Chayes reported for NPR from Afghanistan, but put down her microphone to become an aid worker and a sort of ad hoc advisor and critic of the U.S. backed government of Hamid Karzai.

Her new book, "The Punishment of Virtue: Inside Afghanistan After the Taliban, " leaves an image of Chayes sort of seizing the lapels of anyone who would listen, to point out the wide spread corruption in the regional governments, run by former warlords appointed by Karzai and U.S. forces.

Last week, on the 5th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Robin Young moderated a talk with Chayes for Boston's Ford Hall Forum.
