Umass Researcher Wins Nobel

Americans Andrew Fire and Craig Mello, are sharing the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering a powerful way to turn off the effect of specific genes.

Their discovery, a process known as "RNA Interference" is widely used to study the function of genes and it could open a new avenue in the fight against diseases such as cancer and aids.

Fire teaches at Stanford University; Mello at the University of Massachusetts Medical school in Worcester.

Earlier today, Mello told Here and Now's Bob Oakes about the Nobel-winning research.
