Union for White Collar Workers
Story aired: Tuesday, October 03, 2006

The number of planned job cuts in the U.S. last month topped 1,000,000 up more than 50 percent from August.

And further prooof that a college degree does not insulate you from the pressures of a global economy., September's lay-off announcements included the 14,000 white collar jobs cut by Ford Motor Company, and the 750 jobs that Marsh and McLennan, the world's largest insurance broker, plans to eliminate, bringing to 6,000 the number of white collar jobs lost at the firm in the last two years.

Our guest Barbara Ehrenreich, author of "Nickel and Dimed" previously focused her attention on the plight of waitresses and her workers at Wal-Mart. The service industry in her latest book, bait and switch, she switches to professionals. And has just launched something called united professionals, she joins us now from a studio in New York.
