Your Brain on Music
Story aired: Wednesday, November 15, 2006

Levitin, who received his doctorate in psychology from the University of Oregon, explores the connection our brain makes to muscial notes, why we are attracted to certain types of songs, and how we categorize music.

In his book's introduction, Levitin traces his love for the "sound" of music back to a pair of headphones given as a gift by his father.

He was no longer listening to tunes blaring from his speakers and floating in open space. His interactions with music were now a personal experience.

From this point, Levitin's love affair with melodies began to crescendo. He joined a rock band, studied cognitive science at Stanford University, and compiled his research and experiences in this book he hopes fuses his love of music and psychology in a way that is accessible to everyone who shares his passion.

Guests:

Dr. Daniel Levitin
