Committee Grills Gonzalez Story aired: Thursday, January 18, 2007
From spying on Americans, to torture and the rights of Guantanamo Bay detainees, Bush administration policies came under intense fire on Capitol Hill today as Attorney General Alberto Gonzales testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senator Arlen Specter, the former chair of that committee, said he and other Republicans paid a political price for some of the choices the administration has made.
Democrat Patrick Leahy, the committee's new chair, grilled the attorney general about whether the president had used a signing statement to override law and allowed American's mail to be opened.
Joining us on the line from Capital Hill with more on this rather testy hearing is Demetri Sevastopulo, Pentagon and intelligence correspondent for the Financial Times.
