"Monique and the Mango Rains"
Story aired: Monday, January 22, 2007

The mango rains were the short, light rains that were thought to make the mango sweet.

Monique was the charismatic woman who had a great sense of humor. She was the woman responsible for the future of her village.

She was officially employed by her government, for the stressful 24-hour duties of being a midwife. She carried her own child on her back as she worked. But she always longed for more.

She was the first woman in her village to go on birth control and to protest against female genital mutilation.

Monique died during childbirth due to complications. Her sister vowed on Monique's grave to become a midwife.
