Charges Possible in Induced Abortion Case Story aired: Thursday, January 25, 2007
A Massachusetts teenage may face homicide charges in an unusual case which hinges on when she took an anti-ulcer medication with the intent to abort an unwanted pregnancy.
Amber Abreu, 18-years-old and a recent immigrant to Lawrence, Mass. from the Dominican Republic, says she took the medication to end her pregnancy -- a practice that is reportedly common in her home country.
Abreu delivered a premature baby girl who died four days after birth. Since it is illegal in Massachusetts to have an abortion after 24 weeks of pregnancy, prosecutors are trying to determine when she took the medication.
