By 1940, more than half of France was living under occupation by the Third Reich, the rest of the country was governed by the collaborationist Vichy government, which agreed to turn over intellectuals, artists and immigrants to the Nazis.

The there where those who helped them escape. In her new book "Villa Air-Bel: World War II, Escape, and a House in Marseille" author Rosemary Sullivan chronicles the efforts of an underground movement to shelter individuals declared as enemies by Hitler's Third Reich.
