Arturo Toscanini (AP)
Toscanini's Legacy
Story aired: Thursday, March 29, 2007

Arturo Toscanini was worshipped in his time. In fact, his broadcasts with the NBC Orchestra made him the "American Idol" of his day.

Toscanini is also remembered for his unwavering opposition to fascism before and during World War II. He was strongly critical of Benito Mussolini and refused to conduct at Germany's Bayreuth Festival after Hitler came to power. He also helped to establish what would become the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Fifty years after his death, the name Arturo Toscanini still resonates for classical music lovers. To remind us why we should be reminded of this great Italian conductor, producer Sara Fishko shares her thoughts about the life and work of Tarturo Toscanini.
