A Translator's Tale
Story aired: Tuesday, April 03, 2007

Asma'a Abdi, a 30-year-old Iraqi woman, gained refugee status here in the U.S. last month. Abdi had worked as a translator for Gerry Burke, a retired Massachusetts state police trooper who was one of the first people sent to Baghdad to advise police forces there.

Burke had been trying for months to help Abdi escape the violence in Iraq. He was helping her apply for a student visa when Abdi ended up getting a special new visa -- one set up for translators who worked with Americans.

Asma'a Abdi is now living with Gerry's family in the Boston area until she's able to get settled.
