How Safe are Schools? Story aired: Tuesday, April 17, 2007
Virginia Tech had been working on a system to get emergency alerts to students by cell phone text messages. But the University of Washington has a safety team in place charged with herding people into safe areas in the event of violence and that system failed when a staffer was killed by her former boyfriend on April 3.
So, can schools really protect against random violence?
This is the business of Michael Dorn of Safe Havens International, a non-profit firm based in Georgia that advises organizations including schools about security. Dorn has worked as a police officer in a university setting and he recently wrote about preventing weapons assaults in Campus Safety magazine. He joins us on his cell phone as he tries to catch a plane.
