Gonzales Testifies
Story aired: Thursday, April 19, 2007

His breath nervously catching at times, U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales went before Congress today to defend the firings of eight U.S. attorneys last year as he fought to keep his job.

But Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, was incredulous that Gonzales said in a press conference last month that he was not involved in any discussions about the firings. This comment was later contradicted by his top aide, forcing Gonzales to retract it

Senator Specter said that what Gonzales once dismissed at "an overblown personnel matter'" has now led to essentially a re-confirmation hearing today for the embattled attorney general.

Joining us on the line from Capitol Hill is Christian Science Monitor congressional correspondent Gail Chaddock.
