House Hearings on Battlefield Information Story aired: Tuesday, April 24, 2007
The first congressional inquiry into misinformation from the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan opened with emotional testimony today.
Kevin Tillman accused the U.S. military of what he called "deliberate and calculating lies," intentional falsehoods, fraud and even criminal negligence concerning the death of his brother, Pat Tillman, the former NFL player killed by friendly-fire in Afghanistan.
Also testifying today was former Army Private Jessica Lynch, whose rescue in 2003 was heralded in the first days of the war in Iraq. She was presented as a hero back then, but she told lawmakers today that "the American people are capable of determining their own ideals of heroes and they don't need to be told elaborate tales."
