Last night Robin Young had the sad task of e-mailing her friend Cong Tran in Vietnam to tell him that journalist David Halberstam, had been killed in a car accident in California.

Halberstam won a Pulitzer Pize for his coverage of the Vietnam War and penned the classic "The Best and the Brightest." He went back to Vietnam in 1999 where Vietnamese translator Cong Tran became his guide. We reached Tran this morning at his home where he set up an altar in honor of the American journalist he so revered.
