Report on Iraq
Story aired: Thursday, September 06, 2007

Retired Marine General James Jones, who headed the panel charged by Congress to study the Iraqi security forces, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that some progress has been made in Iraq, but that the country's security forces are far from ready to take over from coalition troops. Jones gave a passing grade to the Iraqi army, but recommended disbanding Iraq's national police force. He also called for reducing U.S. forces in Iraq and shifting the nature of their mission.

Demetri Sevastopulo of the Financial Times
