The song of a singing baker who became one of opera's best know maestros died this morning at his home in Modena, Italy after a year --long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 71.

Alex Ross, who writes about classical music for The New Yorker and on his blog "The Rest is Noise," talks about the life and legacy of one of opera's great stars.
