Torah Touchstone. (Photo by Linda J. Hirsch)
The Jews of Cuba
Story aired: Thursday, September 20, 2007

Before the Cuban revolution, 15,000 Jews lived on the Caribbean Island. Today the 1,200 Jews, most of whom live in Havana, have no rabbi and only one kosher butcher.

We speak with photographer Linda Hirsch, who was captivated by fledging Jewish communities when she traveled to Cuba to deliver Hebrew literature and medicine six years ago. Now she carries cameras and encourages the Jews she encounters during her travels to the island to tell their own stories in words and pictures.
