Anthropologists and the U.S. Military
Story aired: Tuesday, October 16, 2007

There is a long history of anthropologists assisting the military but their use in the field in Iraq and Afghanistan is causing controversy. We speak with David Price, professor of anthropology at Saint Martin's University in Washington state. Price is co-author of a pledge that asks anthropologists to boycott the so-called Human Terrain teams working in Iraq and Afghanistan. We also speak with Montgomery McFate, a cultural anthropologist who works for the Army. McFate advocates for the use of social science to improve military operations and strategy.
