Locavores Story aired: Monday, January 21, 2008
Locavores are people who eat locally grown food, because it's fresher, keeps local economies strong, and especially because, locavores say, it fights global warming by cutting down on carbon emissions caused by transporting food across continents and over seas.
James McWilliams, author of a forthcoming history of pesticide use, says eating local is a good idea, unless you live in the desert, and sometimes it can be "greener" to transport food than to grow it locally.
Guests:
James McWilliams, visiting scholar at Yale University and author of the forthcoming history of pesticide use, "American Pest."
