Story aired: Thursday, March 06, 2008

Fighting poverty was the centerpiece of John Edwards' campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, but he was overshadowed by Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and eventually dropped out of the race. So where does that leave poverty as a campaign issue in 2008? Our guest is Matt Bai, who covers national politics for the New York Times Magazine. He is also author of, "The Argument: Billionaries, Bloggers and the Battle to Remake Democratic Politics."

Recent research by neuroscientists has found that the heightened stress levels associated with a life of poverty can actually impair the brain development of children, with serious repercussions for their future life chances. We speak with Dr. Martha Farah, director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania and a leading researcher on the the effects of socioeconomic adversity on children's brain development.

Guests:

Matt Bai, New York Times Reporter, and Dr. Martha Farah, director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at UPenn
